Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are the structural backbone of water-based defoamer emulsions. They stabilize the oil-in-water (O/W) system by reducing interfacial tension between the defoamer oils and the water phase. More importantly, in defoamer chemistry, they are engineered to control the "release rate"—ensuring the emulsion is stable in the bottle but breaks rapidly upon contact with foam.

    FEATURES

General Properties: Amphiphilic molecules (containing both hydrophilic and lipophilic groups); characterized by specific HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) values.
Synergistic Role in Defoamers: They dictate the droplet size and stability of the defoamer emulsion. The emulsifier must be carefully selected to create a "metastable" emulsion: strong enough to survive storage and transport, but weak enough to rupture and release the active defoamer oil exactly when it encounters a foam lamella.
     Performance Benefits:
Controls Droplet Size Distribution: Optimizes the physical size of the defoamer droplets for maximum foam-breaking efficiency.
Regulates Targeted Release: Balances shelf-life stability with rapid, on-demand breakage (release) at the foam interface.
Improves Dilutability: Allows the defoamer concentrate to be easily and stably diluted with water in the spray tank or process line.
